Christine Triner’s The Demon’s Spawn begins in Salem in 1693, where Elspeth is carrying twins after an encounter with the demon Baleth. Condemned during the witch trials, she dies before giving birth, but the unborn children are promised another life. Centuries later, the twins return as Eliza and Eloise, then grow up apart after being adopted. Eliza is raised in England with no knowledge of her sister. Eloise is taken to Salem, where Baleth remains close and begins shaping her life. As the girls approach adulthood, Eliza experiences disturbing sensations linked to someone she cannot identify. When she learns that she has a twin named Eloise, those unexplained experiences take on a new meaning, leading Eliza across the Atlantic to find the sister she has never known.
Christine Triner’s The Demon’s Spawn is ferocious demonic horror, with its evil given a distinctly personal face. Eloise is a fearsome antagonist, especially as her rage over Jessie’s assault feeds the cruelty she directs at her mother. Eliza is easy to root for amid the danger surrounding her. Salem becomes sinister once Eliza reaches the isolated house hidden beyond tangled undergrowth, where a porch swing creaks in the breeze and the air seems to press outward. The pacing is sharp and the twists surprising as Sheriff Dutton begins questioning Eloise’s account of Tilly’s disappearance, making every lie feel dangerous. A later pursuit through damp woods is brutally physical when wet leaves fill Eloise’s mouth as an Alsatian closes in. The book has an unusual blend of demonic horror and murderous family history, and this is perfect for readers who want true supernatural horror with some seriously delicious savage shocks. Very highly recommended.
