In Money Moves A Nation: A Civil Rights Lesson for Children by Hazell Thomas, Jonah doesn’t want to go on a family trip to Mississippi. He would rather stay at home playing video games with his friends. Despite encouragement from his dad about the things he will learn, he is still skeptical. During the journey from Michigan, Jonah is very bored. Their relatives are happy to see them, and on their first day, Grandpa takes them to the cotton fields despite Jonah’s protests. Grandpa explains the awful conditions suffered in the cotton fields and how they helped fuel the Civil Rights Movement. Next, he takes them to one of the oldest African-American neighborhoods, which was home to many blues singers and actors. What other things will Jonah learn, especially about the blues?

Money Moves A Nation: A Civil Rights Lesson for Children by Hazell Thomas is wonderfully written, and the themes captured will resonate with many audiences. Issues like the excessive use of electronics, which is rampant in current society, and the need for children to embrace other means of passing the time will resonate with many parents. I also loved the emphasis on teaching history to the current generation. The illustrations by Wayne Thomas and Fritz Hartman are wonderful and will help capture the imagination of the young reader. The author also ensured subtle messaging, which helps pass on the intended message without alienating anyone. The narration was excellent, and the easy-to-understand language made the work accessible. This was a good read, and I look forward to more by Hazell Thomas.
