“At what point does the desire to succeed become indistinguishable from the willingness to harm?” For Tanner Barrett, the protagonist of Aaron Ryan's short novel The Darkness Within, that question is answered in a horrific manner. Tanner is an indie author caught in a slump as his popularity fades. His once best-selling books now languish in obscurity, as his life is dominated by one-star reviews, scammers, and the frenetic pace of trying to stay relevant in an industry saturated by millions of new titles each year. Despite his efforts to leverage the best marketing practices, Tanner is fast becoming a has-been. Then fate intervenes, or more precisely, his friend Austin introduces Tanner to SYNTAX, an unknown, all-purpose enhancement drug. Under the influence of this mysterious potion, Tanner's fortunes change, and he once again becomes the talk of the town, but there's a catch. The drug enhances not only mental acuity and physical attributes but also something present in all of us: the darkness within.

Familiar yet brilliant, The Darkness Within by Aaron Ryan is more than a reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde; it is a masterclass in execution. The plot is well known: a man experiments on himself in an attempt to improve, resulting in disastrous consequences. While themes of substance abuse and the price of relentless obsession with fame are present throughout, the strength of the book lies in Aaron's skills as an author. The tale is presented as a journal, with a font and prose that carefully mimic the protagonist's mental state, ranging from adequate to sophisticated, from competent to unhinged. While it's a fast-paced story with a very relatable main character, the premise of an indie author suffering the trials and tribulations of the industry includes a mix of horror, satire, publishing reality, and perhaps even Aaron venting. In all honesty, I normally do not care for reimagined stories; however, The Darkness Within is an exception. Not only do I highly recommend this tale, but it's also an absolute must-read for every author who has ever penned a story.

In Aaron Ryan's The Darkness Within, horror novelist Tanner Barrett once built his career on bestselling thrillers, but falling sales leave him afraid his readers are gone. When his friend Austin gives him Syntax, an untraceable serum said to repair the body and sharpen language, Tanner sees a way back. His sister Tara Gayle warns him that no one knows where the substance came from, but Tanner takes it as he races to finish The Darkness Within, the book he believes can restore his name. At first, the serum erases his pain and speeds up his writing. Then the blackouts begin. As a hostile reviewer enters Tanner’s thoughts and a police inquiry reaches his door, Tara must face what Syntax may be turning her brother into before his comeback becomes something worse.

If ambition had a chemical taste, The Darkness Within by Aaron Ryan would pour it straight down your throat. I loved the way the book builds Tanner Barrett’s horror from the inside out, beginning with a fading author’s need to matter before Syntax turns that need into something far less human. The build-up works because each small choice is defensible at first. That makes the ultimate spiral nastier when success begins looking like contamination instead of reward. Tanner has the raw, twitchy vibe of someone who wants love but keeps reaching for applause. Tara gives the story a grounded sisterly alarm, so the horror stays painfully close to home even as it mutates. I would recommend this to readers who like body horror rooted in creative obsession, especially when dread crawls under the skin before anyone realizes the door is locked. Very highly recommended.

The Darkness Within is a psychological thriller by Aaron Ryan. Tanner Barrett used to write bestsellers. But it's been a while since any of his novels were praised by critics or the general public. Desperate to recover his lost glory and silence his most vocal naysayers, Tanner resorts to drinking a strange serum he received from his friend to boost his creativity. Soon, he finishes writing the bestseller he always wanted. However, he is plagued by constant nightmares and blackouts that he can't explain. He also starts showing withdrawal symptoms from the serum. While his sister, Tara, is worried by his behavior, people with links to Tanner end up being mysteriously killed. He flees to Morocco and becomes increasingly unhinged. With the authorities searching for him, will Tanner find his way back?

The Darkness Within is a pulse-pounding thriller with a healthy dose of suspense and horror. What struck me instantly was Aaron Ryan's unconventional approach to the narrative. The entire story is told through journal entries of the main character, Tanner, and his sister, Tara. This made the tale very intimate and immersive for me. Ryan's ability to put you in the character's headspace is truly commendable. Tanner is unhinged but fascinating to read about. He starts the story trying to prove his worth as an author, and by the end, becomes someone you could never have foreseen. The slow deterioration of his mind is perfectly captured in an absorbing narrative that keeps its hooks in you until the end. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers and horror, do not miss out on this book!
