“Monsters Are So Much Fun”, by Danny Pettry II, is written for pre-school to First Grade ages. It is a colorful book using rhymes and a variety of non-threatening “monsters” to teach basic fundamentals of reading, spelling, counting, and learning numbers 1 through 10. Pettry uses a combination of photographs and clip-art: the photographs are of “toy monsters by ‘Der Bears Toy Factory’”. Throughout the book the photographs appear on the left hand page, with the colorful clip-art on the right hand page. This provides consistency and balance, helping maintain a child’s interest. Using photos of toy monsters is a good idea, as it also ingrains children with the notion that “monsters” equal “toys”, combating the “there’s a monster under my bed” drama many parents contend with.

I like the vivid, brilliant colors throughout the book. I am color-blind, and thus can attest to the value of using bright colors to maintain interest and encourage involvement. I also like the use of very large and simple text throughout the book, which helps keep children focused on the page, and gives them a sense of progress with the frequent page turning. The use of rhyme to introduce each successive number is consistent on each page; that repetition soon will have children repeating the rhyme every time the page is turned. In my formal experience reading with children I find that repetitious precursor to reading is very important. Mr. Pettry has already completed the next two volumes in this series, and currently is working on a guidebook for the West Virginia sesquicentennial.
