Monsters Love Brownies by Ben Okon is a children’s picture book and part of the Mythical Feasts series. This is a story about monsters who absolutely love brownies and will eat them with peanut fudge and walnuts whisked in. They each have their special preferences; the two-eyed monsters prefer double chocolate chip brownies, and the one-eyed monsters prefer them lathered in syrup to make gripping them easier. But a monster’s craving for brownie treats cannot be complete without a good nighttime game of hide-and-seek! They absolutely enjoy playing this game in dark bedrooms or closets with their tasty brownie treats that are hard to see. They make it a point to steer clear of milk because it’s light and harder to hide. But what happens when a tiny monster falls right into white milk? Readers are invited to find out.
Ben Okon has done a great job with this bedtime story about monsters and brownies. It is a fun and delightful way to open children’s minds to try things they would not normally like, just like the monsters and their disdain for milk. Komal Sharma has created some very lively illustrations that make the narrative even more intriguing. The extra-large brownies are enough to make a child’s mouth water, while the different breeds of monsters are too lovable to be scary. Adding the recipe for Midnight Fright Brownie Bites for children to make themselves is a wonderful touch to get them immersed in more than just the story. Readers who love similar quirky works, such as Dragons Can’t Eat Snow Cones by Amanda Sobotka, will definitely find Monsters Love Brownies a wonderful addition to the world of children’s adventure stories.
