The Baggers by James Hale is a story about the gangs in Saint Albans, Kanawha County. The streets of Saint Albans are ruled by the Baggers, most of whose members are young adults who commit theft and other petty crimes. An older generation of scavengers called the Cart Kings are their only rivals. However, the arrival of a certain Jared Banks from Chicago turns the Baggers into a more organized and effective crew. The brutal murder of a teenage Bagger by some red-hooded thugs brings Detective Miller Bailey into the investigation. Two young brothers, Tommy and Silas Hatfield, suddenly find themselves embroiled in a potentially fatal game of cat and mouse. To save their lives, Pastor Jett Thomas decides to help Detective Bailey. But a ruthless gang from out of town is making the city even more dangerous.
The Baggers is one of the best crime drama novels of the year for me. At its heart, this book is about the influence of community and family on the youth. I felt that James Hale did a great job of showing how wayward youths get drawn into gangs in modern cities. The author has created an atmospheric setting. It felt both realistic and immersive. Hale laces every chapter with just enough suspense and mystery to keep readers guessing about the next turn of events. It's primarily a character-driven crime drama. But I also found the plot quite intriguing. The scenes depicting the turf war between the two main gangs had me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed the ending. Tommy and Silas have satisfying story arcs. Furthermore, Detective Bailey and Pastor Thomas are likable characters and easy to root for. Highly recommended.
