In D. Werkmeister’s Monstrosity, book three in the VOLK series, after former priest Cigus Varney is murdered inside the Philadelphia home of Alexandra Stepanova, a former Russian test subject, FBI agent Terri Watson discovers the killing is connected to a secret organization devoted to hunting people like Alexandra. Years earlier, Russian geneticist Peter Lavroski altered Alexandra’s DNA, giving her the ability to transform into a werewolf. Now Lavroski wants to defect after a new experiment produces Dmitry Kamirov, a soldier altered into a vampire whose existence threatens to expose the Russian program. As Terri works to keep Alexandra hidden, evidence points to an FBI informant secretly feeding her location to the hunters. The investigation eventually draws Terri to Vienna, where Lavroski hopes to reach Western intelligence before the forces pursuing Alexandra can find him first.
D. Werkmeister’s Monstrosity takes its title from the hunters who regard shapeshifters as monsters marked for destruction. Alexandra Stepanova is my favorite character because the author gives her a strong sense of humanity beneath her supernatural abilities, shown when she comforts a shy child at an airport by admiring her stuffed dolphin. FBI agent Sarah Holmes is an amazing supporting character whose consideration feels natural, especially when she worries about excluding a colleague from a meeting and remembers a server’s name because of a lesson from her mother. On the flip side is industrialist Karl Jaeger, who is a truly imposing antagonist. This is a guy who is deliberate in how he studies employees, selecting special recruits and assigning them to a department that reports directly to him. He has his own paranormal strength: touch-triggered visions that are used in stark contrast to Alexandra’s ability to sense distress from afar. Adult readers who enjoy paranormal FBI thrillers are sure to love this. Very highly recommended.
