Mrs. Murray’s Home is a work of fantasy and supernatural thrills written for middle grade and young adult readers by author Emily-Jane Hills Orford. In the third novel in The Piccadilly Street Series, we find ourselves tagging along with Mary as she travels with her grandmother, the ghostly Mrs. Murray, and the magical Brownies back to a mysterious castle which Mrs. Murray once called home. Set amongst the mysteries of Scotland, we discover that this new homeland for the group has some surprises of its own, as well as a few restless spirits which haven’t fully been put to rest from their previous adventures.
Author Emily-Jane Hills Orford knows how to craft an atmosphere, and this highly engaging read is chock-full of it from start to finish. With vivid descriptions, beautifully placed imagery and a fully realized use of multi-sensory depiction, the murky plains of Scotland and its many creepy mysteries really do come to life for their intended audience. It was easy to step straight into the story without prior knowledge. The plot is not over-complicated but still has many exciting twists, making it a highly accessible story for the younger end of the reading spectrum, but still a fulfilling adventure for an adult. I really loved the individuality and personalities given to each of the Brownies, which brings some great comic relief amid the more tense scenes. Overall, Mrs. Murray’s Home is an excellent supernatural romp that comes as a highly recommended read for fantasy fans everywhere.
