Ms. Ruby and the Gigi Squad by Vickie G Rodgers tells a cute children's story about the friendship between four children and an elderly woman, accompanied by beautiful illustrations by Vidyu Vasudevan. Ms. Ruby is living in a retirement center and is feeling a bit lonely, so she contacts her friend, Gigi, for help. Gigi immediately knows the perfect group of four kids to befriend Ms. Ruby, her grandchildren: Caroline, Will, Cole, and Avery. The Gigi Squad is quick to step into action, visiting Ms. Ruby, getting to know her, and planning fun surprises for her. With one holiday after another, they come up with more and more fun ideas to make Ms. Ruby feel special and involved in their lives.

Based on real people and true events, Ms. Ruby and the Gigi Squad shows that people of all ages can be friends. With experience from her work in a large retirement community, Vickie G Rodgers provides wonderful examples of ways that children can interact with elderly people and bring joy to their lives. Ms. Ruby was not the only one to benefit from this friendship, as the children loved befriending someone new and learning about her past and her likes. It was cute seeing the different themes and ideas that the children came up with for their next adventure with Ms. Ruby, such as the Sunshine Bag, which is also available for readers to make. With additional resources, discussion questions, and kindness projects included, this book is sure to be a hit for readers of all ages.
