Murder Under A Bitter Moon by Abigail Keam follows Mona Moon during what should be the busiest and most exciting week of her year—Kentucky Derby season. She’s organizing events at Moon Manor, welcoming guests, and enjoying the spotlight that comes with her social standing. Among those guests is Dr. Beryl Farris, her former mentor, who arrives with a serious dilemma: someone wants her silenced because of a speech she’s supposed to give about her controversial Civil War research, including a theory that Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis may have been half-brothers. Mona worries that Dr. Farris’ findings won’t be well-received, so she takes precautions, but things don’t stay controlled for very long. There are warnings, tension in the community, and signs that certain dangerous groups are watching closely. Then Beryl disappears just before the Derby festivities peak. Mona is left trying to figure out who crossed the line and why now.
Murder Under A Bitter Moon by Abigail Keam blends historical drama with a mystery that slowly tightens its grip. The story takes its time establishing all the social connections, and then things start falling into place once the danger becomes more direct. Mona stands out because she’s practical and doesn’t panic, even when things clearly spiral. I love how her detailed conversations with other significant characters slowly help piece together what’s really happening regarding Dr. Farris' disappearance. This is where the story becomes hard to put down, as readers learn more about the town’s history and the dangers lurking. The transformation from polite gatherings to real danger was sharp. Overall, I enjoyed seeing how Mona handled the mounting pressure while trying to maintain control. It helped build the unease simmering underneath the polished surface. If you're a fan of mysteries that build through atmosphere and social friction, this book is very highly recommended.
