My Brother’s Spare is a work of fiction in the mystery and fantasy sub-genres, and was penned by author Shira Behore. The work is written for the young adult reading audience and contains some mild use of profanity throughout and scenes of fantasy violence and bloodshed. The story centers on protagonist Valeria Anson, who lives her life with the traumatic memory of witnessing her mother’s death. Her father is the Chief of the King’s Imperial Force, but he and her twin brother have let go of the idea of ever finding the killer. So when Valeria has a unique and dangerous opportunity to take the investigation into her own hands, she grabs it, even if that means associating with a vicious assassin by night.
Author Shira Behore has crafted a well-penned and intricate young adult mystery novel with all the makings of a massive hit. For starters, we find ourselves enthralled by Nieve and its chilly, dangerous streets and enveloped by the stunning worldbuilding of this new land. Then there are the characters, who have heartfelt, realistic emotional arcs to follow but are also skilled, dangerous, and exciting in unique ways. Behore’s depiction of the sinister and mysterious Alias Black is one that stayed with me long after I finished the book: a shadowy figure who will haunt many dark corners of the reader’s mind. Overall, I would recommend My Brother’s Spare for fans of the YA genre looking for deft worldbuilding, fabulous mysteries, and a central hero to admire and relate to.
