In My Business Is Now North, Anthony Sobb recounts what happens when his wife Kim, a Sydney solicitor and mother of their three sons, is diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. As treatment takes over the family's routines, Anthony sets aside much of his work running Fairfield RSL to remain by Kim's side. He questions medical decisions as he works to preserve the experiences that still matter to Kim throughout her illness. For nearly four years, caring for Kim gives his days direction. When she dies at Mexico City Airport in 2018, Anthony returns to a life that no longer has the purpose around which he organized everything. His account follows his attempt to live in her absence and discover what moving forward might mean for him.
In My Business is Now North, Anthony Sobb delivers a moving account of his devotion to his wife Kim during her treatment for lung cancer. His writing is candid, especially in the emails he sent friends, and I felt the strength of their marriage through his honesty. When Kim explains that an occasional glass of champagne helps her feel like his wife, he takes her words to heart. It is a lovely reminder for anyone supporting a sick partner to value what still brings that person happiness. I was just as moved by his account of walking Spain’s Camino pilgrimage, where his friend Greg silently places a hand on his shoulder as grief overtakes him. That beautifully described gesture says so much about the comfort of friendship following bereavement. This heartfelt memoir deserves to be read by anyone seeking reassurance through serious illness or the loss of someone they love.
