The food words are simple: salmon, halibut, chowder, rhubarb, sourdough pancakes, moose sausage, crabs, mushrooms, and more. This is the kind of book that makes snack time and story time one blissful bonding moment. It gives a sense of home about food, family, and the outdoors—planting an early seed of Alaskan pride and identity.
The writing is simple, heartfelt, and just right for young ears. Each page reads like a cheerful childhood memory, whether it’s Dad catching a huge halibut or Grandma foraging for mushrooms in the woods. The pacing gives youngsters time to appreciate the food and the story, then reengages them with the vocabulary words.
