My Lovely Dark Summer is a sci-fi mystery by Tom Connelly. Laura Gibbons was just about to turn sixteen when her mother moved the family from sunny California to the small town of Fordington in New York. Curious about the "road to nowhere", where an event known as the Blaze happened a couple of decades ago, Laura and her new friends, Mel and Siobhan, venture into the woods hoping to explore the place. Instead, they stumble upon a fallen pine tree that leads them to a mysterious cave. Laura, Mel, and Siobhan encounter something unexplainable in the cave. After their return to town, the three friends delve into the mystery of that place. But now, Siobhan is missing, and Laura is having weird dreams. Can she rescue Siobhan in time?
My Lovely Dark Summer is part YA coming-of-age tale and part mystery. Packed with suspense and intrigue, author Tom Connelly has crafted an engrossing narrative featuring layered characters and a plot that keeps surprising you at every turn. It's a very well-paced story with lots of hooks to keep the reader absorbed all the way through. Laura, Siobhan, and Mel make a dynamic trio that will be a hit among readers, especially teenagers and young adults. The genuine human interactions and the emotional stakes set this book apart from most other mystery thrillers. Connelly also does a fantastic job of slowly revealing the mystery by peeling away the layers one at a time. If you enjoy paranormal series like Stranger Things, you will absolutely love this book.
