Aubrey had a loving mom and dad, and they were a close and happy family until that one dreaded day when a horrible accident took her dad, leaving Aubrey and her mom alone. To deal with losing her husband, Aubrey’s mom chose the bottle to drown out her pain. Aubrey would walk into their home and find her mother lying on the floor drunk or asleep and unable to communicate. One day upon returning home, she didn’t find her mom at first, but after checking her parent’s bedroom, there she was grieving the loss of her husband. When she sees that she is being watched, life changes forever for Aubrey.

The twists and turns in her mom’s attitude were so horrific and unbelievable Aubrey had no idea what was happening. What could have happened to trigger her mom’s change in attitude? Can Aubrey handle the abusive attitude her mom suddenly developed?

As I read about Aubrey losing her dad to a horrible accident and her mom to a life of drinking to smother the lost of her husband, I thought that was sad enough. But as I continued to read about the abuse this young girl had to endure from her mom, it broke my heart. Even though this is a fictional story, the author is dealing with real life issues that people face today. I appreciate that the author, Spring Carrion, shows what happens when a person turns to drinking instead of to God and to friends to help get through grief, how alcohol destroys the person and everyone around them.

This is a wonderful story of love, loss, betrayal, caring and survival. I would encourage anyone, and especially someone going through difficult times, to read this book! It will be worth your time.
