My Sexy Veterinarian: The Texas Kincaids #2 by Bonnie Phelps is a contemporary romance novel set against the cowboy culture of Texas. My Sexy Veterinarian starts off with an introduction to Nate Kincaid, a rugged bachelor working on running his own veterinary practice. He is still dealing with the death of his fiancée over a year ago. Although outwardly calm, he has a deep fear of commitment while his mother and family do their best to introduce him to eligible young women and play matchmaker. On the other hand, Lauren is a counselor and also a determined free spirit with past baggage of her own. However, the two instantly hit it off and, much against his will, Nate finds himself drawn towards her on a deeper level. To get his family off his back, he suggests that she pretend to be his girlfriend. But things don’t go quite as planned as he finds himself falling for her.

My Sexy Veterinarian by Bonnie Phelps is a typical modern romance read, but the fun and engaging writing style makes it seem different and refreshing. I definitely liked the character portrayal of Lauren as a smart, sexy, successful woman who is all for gender equality and sees nothing wrong with women making the first move. On the other hand, I did not like certain aspects of Nate’s character. Although he is portrayed as a sensitive and honest guy in some ways, I found his inherent sexism a bit of a turn-off, as well as the excessive leaning on his family in terms of conforming to what they or society might think. The example that comes to mind is when he judges Lauren and washes her out if she happens to make the first move or indulge in sex on the first date. I found this to be regressive in its inherent gender bias. Still, leaving these few criticisms aside, I did enjoy reading this book overall with its fun storyline and numerous background stories.
