Mystic Spires Post-Mortem is the third crime novel by bestselling author, lawyer, and judge Stacey Jernigan. The story unfolds at the Mystic Spires Hotel, a historic jewel with an enigmatic reputation for its decades-long curses, mysterious deaths, scandals, and fires. Genevieve Mesero, a.k.a. Gigi, and her sister Valentina inherit this hotel after their father’s death. Suddenly, Gigi dies under suspicious circumstances. The autopsy report establishes strychnine poisoning as the cause of Gigi’s death. The police investigation delves into Gigi’s complex life and uncovers many suspects, but no one is convicted. Long after Gigi’s case had been closed, Judge Avery Latimer, her court clerks, her retired police officer husband, and her daughter started looking into Gigi’s death again. Will they unravel this mystery?
Mystic Spires Post-Mortem is riveting and unique. I fervently hope it becomes Stacey Jernigan’s new bestseller. The author deftly transposed an unsolved murder near Dallas that happened in the 1980s into an exhilarating work of crime fiction with thoroughly developed characters, second-to-none intrigue, and a light touch of humor. I enjoyed every moment of shadowing Judge Avery as she was reviewing evidence in Gigi’s case. My favorite episode is the Murder Mystery Dinner, where Judge Avery’s court clerks role-played Gigi and the suspects. But most of all, I liked how Stacey debated and portrayed the virtues and vices of artificial intelligence and social media in crime investigation and law enforcement. I highly recommend this awesome story to crime novel fans.
