In Naughty Nadine on Halloween by Chrissy J. Morgan, we are introduced to a mean-spirited girl who enjoys Halloween because she can be obnoxious to other children. She liked to terrorize trick or treaters, parents, and even animals all night long. In fact, she waits specifically for Halloween to do this. The night starts with her making kids cry while she is stealing their treats. Nadine enjoys this cruelty. A little girl named Lucy decides to stand up to this witchy bully by telling her that what she is doing is not all right and this is not how Nadine should act. This boldness caused Nadine to stop and think about her actions. All she had ever done was terrify people on Halloween, but maybe there was a different way? For the first time she stopped to look at the kids and adults she was being mean to and realized how that saddened them. She decided to take a chance and let Lucy show her how a witch is supposed to act on All Hallows’ Eve. Lucy spent the rest of the night with Nadine, showing her that she could have fun without being mean, and surprisingly the little witch enjoyed this so much more.

I thought Naughty Nadine on Halloween was an amusing book that could show children the appropriate way to act toward others. Nobody likes a bully, and Nadine was the worst kind. It’s a great book to teach kids that being a bully is wrong and that there are other ways to have fun. We see an example of that in the way Lucy confronts Nadine and, instead of being nasty in return, she shows her the other side to Halloween that can be enjoyed without being cruel to others. The illustrations are so colorful and vibrant that they give the young reader a sense of Nadine’s world. They fit perfectly with the storyline. I think Chrissy J. Morgan has done a great job with this book and I recommend it.
