When we express ourselves honestly, we remain true to ourselves and are authentic. Being honest sets us free from the burden of maintaining the contradiction between what we feel and what we express. Children should be taught that telling the truth is always better than lying. Ninja Nickles and the Problem with Pickles: The Adventures of Ninja Nickles Book 1 will provide children with a good example. The story concerns Nickles, a dog who performs acrobatics during the night and wants to take advantage of the fact that everyone in the house is asleep to have some pickles. An accident occurs with the pickle bottle and Lincoln, the boy who owns Nickles, is blamed. His pet has the courage to take responsibility and save his owner from being unjustly accused. Leah Cupps shows the importance of telling the truth and encourages children to be honest in what they feel, think, and say.

What I loved most were the rhymes, which are amusing and add enthusiasm to the story. I liked Nickles because he is charismatic, creative, and most of all, loyal. If children understand the value of loyalty, they will become trustworthy adults. They will appreciate that loyalty is not only a commitment to self but they will also cultivate attitudes of respect and sincerity. Ninja Nickles and the Problem with Pickles covers topics such as friendship and family bonding that will help us understand how we can make amends for our mistakes. Leah Cupps teaches children that responsibility includes behaving appropriately, being honest, and helping others when needed. This book is highly recommended.
