Fourteen-year-old Nixon Curry has an adventurous spirit and a larger than life appetite for escapades. It’s hard not to fall in love with the protagonist in Nixon and Dovey: The Legend Returns by author Jay W. Curry. With excellent riding skills and a keen ability to hunt, Nixon dreams of glory on the horse racing circuit. After starting a job at a horse racing stable, and finding himself in the race of his life with nemesis Ben Wilson, his former mentor, Nixon meets the woman who will become the love of his life, Dovey Caldwell. The daughter of a senator, Dovey is soon matched to be married to Wilson, and she and Nixon must fight for the love they both believe in.
I so enjoyed this book. I love historical fiction, and I had never before heard of Nixon Curry. His story is a fascinating one, and the fact that this book was written by his four times great-nephew, Jay W. Curry adds an aura of authenticity and interest seldom present in novels such as this. This book is exciting, fast-paced, interesting, heart-breaking and heart-warming all at once. Nixon and Dovey: The Legend Returns is a book that would be enjoyed by any reader who loves historical fiction, Westerns, action, adventure, or just a great read. I understand that this book is the first of a trilogy planned by the author, and I certainly hope that he’s hard at work on his next book. I, for one, will be waiting for it with great anticipation.
