No Gates With God: Surprises from the Afterlife by Harley Carnes is the story of Jim Emerson as he watches his family struggle after he passes away. Jim died in an earthquake-induced freak accident. Now Jim was dead, but he had not moved on. His wife Annette could feel his ghost, but that was it. Although Jim could make some contact with his wife, he felt powerless as he watched them drown in grief. With their lives shattered, Annie and the kids had no idea how to move on. Jim wondered why he wasn’t moving on or if moving on even existed. Things got worse when Annie came into the line of fire of imminent danger. Jim wanted to protect her, but how?
No Gates with God by Harley Carnes is a bittersweet yet refreshing story. Jim was doing pretty well for someone who died in the beginning, then he panicked and then learned what he was supposed to do. It was almost like a coming-of-age story for Jim and Annie as they learned to “live” again. I loved the trace of humor in the narrative. It added more depth to the story. I loved the prayer Annie said after Jim died; it cracked me up and broke my heart at the same time. Annie’s story was so cathartic, but I loved Jim’s ending. It was philosophical without being too much, felt right, and was a great development for Jim’s character. Little Joanie and Mark were a delight to read, but I loved Jim the most. I would highly recommend this book!
