Amy McNulty delivers beautiful fantasy fiction in Nobody’s Goddess. Noll is on the verge of turning seventeen, and all her friends are moving on, finding their goddesses. Her best friend Jurij found his goddess in Noll’s sister. Women wield power over the men in the village, where men cover their faces with a mask. Should any woman not of their family see their unmasked face, they will cease to exist. The only exception is if a man’s goddess returns his love. Noll has not found the man who would see the goddess in her, and one night in frustration and heartache, she goes to the castle to see the lord and beg for his help, even though no woman is allowed there. It turns out that this lord finds his goddess in Noll, and it is the last thing either of them wants.
Author Amy McNulty truly has a gift with words. Written from the perspective of a strong female protagonist, this gives the reader a deeper insight into Noll’s thoughts and feelings. This book is hauntingly gorgeous and will have you hooked from the very start with an engaging plot. Gliding through the pages of the first book of The Never Veil series is easy with characters who are likable and even relatable. Character growth is evident, and I loved the reality of making decisions and choices with the knowledge available at the time. Nobody’s Goddess is suitable for young adult readers and is filled with more than enough mystery, intrigue, and action. I eagerly await the next book in this series.
