In Nora and the Lighthouse by Robin Murphy, five-year-old Nora is excited to be going on a sleepover at her Nan and Grandpa’s condo. Adding to her anticipation is her wish to climb to the top of the Concord Point Lighthouse and look over the Chesapeake Bay. But there’s just one snag: a person must be 42 inches high to be allowed to do this. Before she actually arrives at her grandparents’ place, Nora imagines herself being just the right height and what visiting the lighthouse will be like. Grandpa tells Nora there is a height chart next to the lighthouse, and the lighthouse volunteer will measure her height. Will Nora’s dream come true, and will it be everything she has imagined it to be, with boats, ducks, and geese on the water?

Beautiful illustrations by April Burril bring Nora and her dreams to life. The realistic images give young readers a detailed idea of Nora’s fun time with her grandparents and what she learns on her trip. Young readers will be drawn to Nora and her ambition to get to the top of the lighthouse. This story highlights how youngsters should be encouraged to have goals and to work toward achieving them. Nora is a delightful little girl whom youngsters will relate to and like. Her warm, loving relationship with her grandparents demonstrates how important family bonds are and will give youngsters food for thought about their own grandparents or older relatives. The narrative has interesting details about the lighthouse and will teach young readers something new. Nora and the Lighthouse by Robin Murphy is an excellent book for story time in class and could spark a project of drawing or making their own lighthouses, or perhaps researching to find the nearest lighthouse to their area. Highly recommended.
