Nostalgia Is Heartless is the second book in The Heartless Series by Sarah Lahey. It's the year 2050, and the planet is facing a major climate catastrophe induced by solar flares. Quinn Buyers, a climate scientist, finds herself going back to live with her father, Matt, a hippie tree lover living in the wilderness near Hobart, Australia. Pregnant and without her partner, Tig, a cyborg, Quinn's life becomes even more complicated because of her Super AI meerkat, Mori, going through an existential crisis. Additionally, her mother is missing, while a mysterious Phaistos Disc may hold the answers to her whereabouts. Quinn must now travel to Antarctica, where a cult called the Shun Mantra is hell-bent on creating an energy vortex with a giant electromagnet inside the earth's core that could lead to disastrous consequences.
A dystopian sci-fi drama novel that mirrors some of the climate issues we're facing today, Nostalgia Is Heartless is an apt reflection of society in the future of human civilization if it doesn't learn from its mistakes soon enough. Author Sarah Lahey weaves an intricate tale about climate change and its impact on human society as a whole. The narrative follows a young climate scientist who finds herself in the midst of a momentous event in human history while trying to navigate her family and personal life. Lahey's writing is exemplary, seamlessly switching POVs and settings to provide a sense of a larger world you find easy to immerse yourself in. If you're a fan of dystopian sci-fi dramas, I highly recommend Nostalgia Is Heartless.
