Of Bairns and Wheelie Bins by Mary T. Wagner is a one-of-a-kind dictionary and guide to understanding British jargon. This book has an extensive collection of words with definitions, specifically to help an audience understand certain terms in the British detective genre. This will introduce you to words from dabs to legless to sarky, which are fun ways to say fingerprints, extremely drunk, and a sarcastic attitude. This is a handy cheatsheet, the perfect resource for fans of British fiction who don’t fully understand the dialogue. A vast assortment of idioms and slang makes it easy, without taking you out of the story on the screen. This book was put together out of a personal need to understand the jargon in British detective shows, without having to pause and look things up. The dictionary is a unique linguistic opportunity to learn fun slang, which can be used both to watch television and when visiting Britain.

The book is unique from other British dictionaries. It specifically focuses on detective jargon, so expect to find words such as SOCOs, historic crime, and growing up in (foster) care. These words can be confusing; however, they translate to meanings we’re familiar with, such as scenes of crime officers, cold cases, and foster care, respectively. Many of the definitions are humorous, making it enjoyable to learn something new. You’ll also enjoy the personality of author Mary T. Wagner in the dictionary, with little commentaries sprinkled throughout that give the definitions a lively flair. This separates the book from other dictionaries and linguistic guides. As much fun as the new words are to learn, reading her various comments makes this a pleasure. This guide would also be great for book clubs that enjoy British fiction. Of Bairns and Wheelie Bins is a delightful dictionary and charming guide, helping you understand British jargon with ease and making learning fun with humorous definitions.
