When Kai Curran meets his long-lost half-brother, Wiley Bortov, who tracks him down to OldTown, Montgomery County, Illinois, he has no idea how much his life is about to change. Wiley not only reveals that he has a four-year-old son, Tam, but also that he is unfit to care for him, and wants Kai to help him find Tam’s mother. Wiley moves into Kai’s apartment, and soon Kai learns that his brother is a drug addict with a past that is haunting him. But that’s not all. Tam’s mother may long be dead, and her sister, the only known remaining family, is as sober as Wiley. As Kai steps up to care for his nephew, he must struggle to keep his life together as both Tam’s demands and his brother’s misery rock his world. Find out how it all goes down in OldTown: Brothers Born by A. K. Frailey.

If you are looking for a literary contemporary drama packed with gritty realism, suspense, and humor, OldTown by A. K. Frailey is a must-read. An intriguing introduction immediately plunged me into Kai’s upended world. Frailey weaves a gripping tale of family dysfunction and drama, love, and self-growth. The raw, intimate nature of the narration made me feel as if I actually met the well-crafted, compelling cast on the pages. I found Wiley intriguing. He is a reflection of those difficult or broken relatives we often have to deal with. I understood Kai’s rage toward Wiley’s carefree attitude, aversion to accountability, and lies, including when he tries to swindle Kai. Yet, I also felt his hurt in watching his brother waste away and not knowing how to help him. Frailey does a great job of depicting the sorry mess that drug addicts wallow in, which often makes them pitiable and loathsome all at once. I loved this read.
