Jane Catherine Rozek writes inspirational true stories of transformation and self-discovery set on the West Coast and in the wilderness of British Columbia’s high Chilcotin Plateau. In Mountain Destiny by Jane Catherine Rozek, Kate is raising her children with Dave on an isolated ranch deep in the Chilcotin backcountry, nearly a hundred miles from town, where the winter cold and distance make every ordinary problem dangerous. The family lives first in a cramped log cabin, later in an abandoned logging camp taken over as caretakers, each place forcing Kate to carry the daily burden of keeping the household functioning in severe conditions. As the years pass, the strain of this life begins to change when Mount Davidson enters the family’s future through the discovery of gold. The mountain soon becomes inseparable from the life Kate is trying to hold together, turning the land surrounding the ranch into the center of the family’s hopes and the source of decisions that will shape everything that follows.
Jane Catherine Rozek’s Mountain Destiny is a beautifully rendered literary novel based on a true story, with its hopeful title depicting both the physical mountain in British Columbia’s Chilcotin country and the path Kate follows as a ranch wife, mother, and later guardian of a mining claim tied to her family’s future. Rozek does an excellent job of balancing hardship against moments that are truly heartening. I nearly cried when Kate watched a herd of Highland cattle form a rotating ring in the brutal cold, so their little calves stay safe at the center. The juxtaposition of the harshness and instinct of nature is absolutely gorgeous. I love Beckie, Kate’s young daughter, who is wonderfully tender. Her care for a trapped finch named Rosy shows her gentleness, while her choice to release it shows a child learning what love asks of her. With spectacular landscapes and a brilliant legal fight Kate must endure for mineral rights, this is a sharply written, ambitious, and perfectly paced novel. Very highly recommended.
