Operation Paperweight is a historical thriller by Bobbie L. Wagner. It's post-World War II Boston, Massachusetts. Born in Germany to parents who fled the Nazi regime and immigrated to America, twenty-year-old Laura Schmitt is now working as an au pair for the wealthy Russian Viktor Orzov, taking care of his children. But her life turns upside down the day she comes across the charismatic Lena Fischer in the local market. Unbeknownst to Laura, Lena works for the CIA and is scouting Laura as a recruit as her superiors consider Viktor Orzov a person of interest. After Lena reveals her true identity to Laura, she convinces Laura to work for her adopted country and trains her as a CIA agent. Meanwhile, Orzov and Russian Ambassador Andrei Gruzinsky are up to something nefarious involving German scientists seeking asylum in America. Can Laura do her duty?
A gripping espionage thriller with twists and turns galore, Operation Paperweight sheds light on a tumultuous time in recent American history, focusing on the ramifications of the Cold War and how it led to the rise of the CIA as the world's most effective intelligence agency. Author Bobbie L. Wagner provides readers with a realistic portrayal of the Cold War era, with an absorbing plot that captures the tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union at an all-time high, with the intelligence agents of both countries trying to infiltrate and procure information from the other. Laura is a fascinating protagonist. As a reader, I was rooting for her, from her recruitment into the agency to her role in Operation Paperweight. I also found her friendship with Lena very heartwarming. If espionage thrillers are your thing, you won't go wrong with this one!
