Oscar's Noisy Dilemma by Nikki Mitchell is about a young octopus excited to attend his first birthday party. Oscar's friend Herman is having the party at his home, but Oscar is also nervous. His big sister Olivia explains what usually happens at birthday parties and tells him he will be fine. Oscar, unlike Olivia and most of his other friends, becomes anxious when he's surrounded by lots of noise and activity. Oscar bravely arrives at the party, and sure enough, the music, talking, and even the squeak of the balloons is too much for him. What will Oscar do? Will he stay at the birthday party? Will his friend Herman be upset?

Nikki Mitchell's Oscar's Noisy Dilemma is a helpful and timely story. Children who struggle with loud noises, unfamiliar routines, and lots of action still want to participate in all the fun activities of childhood. Nikki has created a very self-aware character in young Oscar. He knows he might not be comfortable at this event, yet attends anyway. While acknowledging how uncomfortable he feels, he accepts help from his friends and arrives at a solution that allows him to participate in the celebration. The illustrations are textured and charming. Oscar is very dapper in his little blue bow tie. Oscar's Noisy Dilemma would be a great choice to read before attending any new event. Kids will gain an understanding, whether they are like Oscar or not, of how they can be helpful and solve problems by working together.
