Our Day at the Lake by Jackson D Cooper, with exquisite watercolor illustrations by Ray Shuell, is about a young boy's fishing adventure with his father. The excited boy tells the story from his point of view. He describes how he rises before dawn, has breakfast with his father, then heads out to the lake. He talks about his joy at fishing with his father in the Rocky Mountains. He outlines getting his gear together, especially his flies. When they start fishing, the boy encounters some obstacles, like catching his fly on a big moose, getting stuck in the mud, and fish that don't bite. Eventually, at the end of the day, he finally catches a fish and is glad to share this accomplishment with his dad.
Jackson D Cooper has written a wonderful children's book with full-page watercolor illustrations that perfectly capture the natural atmosphere in beautiful colors. This book is aimed at early readers; the sentences are short and to the point, complemented by the illustrations. Our Day at the Lake is written in rhyme, making it suitable for young listeners and fun to read. This book not only tells the story of their fly fishing day but, at the end, the author includes pictures of the various trout species found in the Rocky Mountains and the flies used to catch them. The author also includes the names of fauna and flora found in the location. This is a lovely book that young readers and listeners alike will enjoy.
