Out of Circulation is the first book in the Hemlock Creek Suspense Series by Heather Day Gilbert. The story begins with Katie McClure’s routine library job being turned upside down by a sub-machine gun wielding intruder. The reader quickly establishes a kinship with the heroine whose permanent limp has diminished her self-confidence, despite her beauty and talents. Handsome Ace Calhoun’s timely arrival scores him the job of being hired as Katie’s bodyguard. He has his own agenda for wanting the job, which conflicts with the unanticipated mutual attraction between himself and Katie. The story picks up pace when numerous attempts are made on Katie’s life.
Both Katie and Ace struggle with doubts regarding their faith. As they confide in each other, they contemplate and search out God’s presence in their lives. While physically attracted to each other from the onset, their mutual respect grows along with the urgency of their situation. When the integrity of Katie’s deceased law enforcement father comes into question, the resulting search brings her family members together in a search, not only for stolen property, but for answers to ghosts of their pasts.
The story immerses the reader in the local atmosphere of Hemlock Creek, West Virginia. The book cover contains vibrant colors which coincide with the suspenseful setting — very attractive. The story, while being adventure-packed, entertains the reader while revealing heartfelt grief and discouragement suffered by individual family members and families as a whole. Through faith and humility, bonds can be reestablished and lives refocused. This is a great read! I very much enjoyed this story, along with the Christian message. Good job!
