Packets of Hope: A Journey of Healing and Rediscovery by Jill Siegal Chalsty is a story of finding a new path in life after personal loss and serious health challenges. Jill had been caring for her husband, John, who had dementia, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After he passed away, she battled lung cancer and decided to give herself a second chance at life by going on a 107-day cruise around the world aboard the Queen Anne. Throughout the journey, she tells education leaders about Overcoming Obstacles, her organization that teaches children various life skills. Through diary entries, the author talks about the events that occurred and how she handled them while going through the processes of grieving and healing.

What surprised me most about Packets of Hope was Jill’s tenderness when talking about her personal experiences. Caring for John during his struggle with dementia was heartbreaking, and the fact that she had breast cancer while doing this is unfathomable. What I liked about the book is that Jill Siegal Chalsty acknowledges minor successes when dealing with her loss and health issues. For example, in the chapter Baby Steps, she writes about how she could not eat outside her home for a long time but gradually began enjoying meals with friends. Jill was also impressed by the cultural differences and the way that the people she met treated her. For instance, the two women from Samoa who agreed to pray for her are a great example of how individuals can improve other people’s lives. In addition, writing in the first person allows the reader to become more engaged in the narration and creates the feeling that they are communicating with Jill directly. I also appreciated that the author not only reflects on her experiences but also shares her purpose and goals in life.
