Paddle for a Purpose is a work of memoir non-fiction penned by author Barb Geiger. Following an incredible ambition and the heartfelt journey that it inspired along the way, this book tracks the progress of Barb and her husband Gene as they embark on a tandem kayak journey to travel the whole length of America’s incredible Mississippi River. What follows is an amazing experience not only for the natural wonders and unusual perspective that they encounter, but because of the people they meet along the way in the river towns, and how the experience shapes and changes them both as individuals.
Where some instances of travel fiction can be all about self-indulgent glamour and luxury these days, the work of author Barb Geiger reminds us of a higher purpose to serve others, and to do good work in any community that we come across. Geiger’s prose is bright and light-hearted but also filled with kindness and affirmations of putting your trust in God and doing good deeds for others. I particularly enjoyed the expansion aspect of the book, which is an interactive feature where you can view a Google Map of the journey itself, complete with gorgeous photographs from the journey. This enhanced the experience so much as I was able to fit Geiger’s vivid descriptions and detailed information alongside the real imagery of the events. Overall, Paddle for a Purpose delivers so much more than your average adventure travel writing piece and is a highly recommended read.
