It’s an ordinary day at the police precinct for coffee connoisseur and adept magicker Detective Valor Lovell. The robberies of high-end homes in the district continue to stymie him and his elephant‑shifter partner, Paul. That is, until Lovell is assigned a new partner who shakes up his safe, comfortable world. Miranda is thrust upon him, fresh from the courts in a last‑ditch effort to pull her off her criminal path. In a world governed by light and dark energy, Miranda throws an ugly spotlight on an underworld Lovell never knew existed. Partner in Crime by G.P. Robbins is an intriguing trip through a world of dragons, unicorns, and the occasional needy elephant shifter. Oh, and an irredeemable, organ‑stealing psychopath.
This urban fantasy, slow‑burn romance features a cast of magical and complex characters. G.P. Robbins establishes an incredible world with enough skill to make the outlandish seem normal after the initial shock of unicorn‑shifting medical staff. I loved the character of Lovell, who bucks the boring trend of emotionally tortured, hardline detectives. Lovell is kind, peaceable—a gentle soul who roasts coffee beans and solves crime. I laughed out loud at his reluctant, breakneck motorbike ride across the city and appreciated how it pushed the boundaries of his nature. Partner in Crime: Magic, Mayhem, and the Law in Precinct #153, Book 2 is about community and what it takes to survive as a collective. It’s a refreshingly sweet detective novel with a little horror thrown in just to keep you on your toes.
