Patience Betrayed: The Hawthorne Diaries II by Olivia Andem is an enthralling historical romance fiction read! The book continues the story of Patience Hawthorne as she navigates the demanding and tumultuous social ladder of the early 1800s. The strict rules of society have specific expectations of how a lady is to conduct herself, as well as what makes a worthy suitor, along with courtship protocol. Unfortunately for Patience, however (as a female living in this rigid time period), she is a fun loving, free and spontaneous spirit. In other words, her actions and words draw disapproval from family and friends. A lady in these times is supposed to act in a certain way and Patience is having a tough time conforming. Patience soon finds herself in one predicament after another and will have to ultimately make a choice – conform to society’s rules or be true to herself and speak out.
Readers are in for a fun and exciting “Jane Austen style” ride and Patience Hawthorne is an enjoyable heroine to root for! I found her spunk and spontaneity refreshing and her interactions with suitors engaging. The author masterfully immerses readers into the historical drama with intriguing and accurate period-appropriate descriptions of lifestyle, transportation, living conditions, etiquette and amenities of the era. I also loved the map and detailed “Families & Character” list in the front of the book; it was invaluable and I referred back to it often as I read (to keep all the characters straight in my head). I would highly recommend Patience Betrayed: The Hawthorne Diaries II by Olivia Andem to all fans of the historical romance genre.
