Jennifer Allis Provost brings us an endearing fantasy romance in Phoenix Rising. Rosalie’s sister has been contracted to marry Lord Blackmoor, the Black Duke. Two nights before the wedding, Rosalie’s sister runs away with her personal guard, leaving their father no alternative but to have Rosalie marry the duke instead. She had her heart set on the convent, content to be with her books. Lochlyn Blackmoor, Lord of Dragon Ridge, is the last dragon-shifter and desperately needs an heir. Together, Lochlyn and Rosalie navigate the unfamiliar terrain of their relationship, finding not only love but the hand of Fate in their new life. Revealed secrets aim to tear them apart, while plans made for them by others threaten their very existence.

Author Jennifer Allis Provost has set the foundation perfectly in the first book of the Fire and Claw series. Even with this being a fantasy, the characters are likeable and very relatable. Character descriptions are also very well implemented throughout. I really enjoyed this author’s writing style, keeping to the heart of the story without being overly descriptive. Honest dialogue between the characters really brought depth to the plot, while the pacing is maintained at the perfect speed with good chapter lengths. Phoenix Rising is a gem of discovery with interesting lore and an intriguing history. Due to some sexual situations, depictions of war, and abuse, this book is recommended for more mature readers. Filled with action, fated mates, deceit, and secrets, this book ticks all the right boxes, and I can’t wait for the next one.
