In Pigs Have Wings, a children's book by Kathleen Welton, Miz Peg is a small pig with large feet that stick to the ground. She dreams of flying through the air and performing fantastic tricks, but she always falls when she attempts this. She believes she'll be able to dance and sing well if she has wings, but her friends tell her she will not grow wings because she is a pig. During a trip to the forest, she sees birds in a nest and believes they will keep her from falling. After her unsuccessful attempt to fly, a bird lands on her and asks her to try again. Miz Peg feels defeated until an owl swoops down and gives her valuable advice that she applies to her next effort.

Kathleen Welton shares this story in a delightful meter, giving the words a melodic feel. Writing with Lewis Carol's "The Walrus and the Carpenter" narrative poem in mind, Welton proves pigs can have wings, even if they aren't literal. Her story will give hope to children who are struggling to achieve a goal. The supportive voices of her new friends provide the courage Miz Peg needs to accomplish her dream, and readers will see how words of affirmation may help a struggling friend easily overcome a challenge. The cute, colorful pictures by Chau Pham will draw children's eyes as they follow the hardships Miz Peg faces. After reading the story to my young children, they thought the hero of the story was the owl who urged Miz Peg to follow her dream, even though it didn't seem attainable. Pigs Have Wings is a great selection for children who need a boost before they try something new or readers who want to be a more encouraging friend.
