Pillars of Salt by J.A. Adams is a murder-mystery corporate thriller set in 1980 and based on a real-life disaster. A salt mine collapse due to an oil rig causes the deaths of a multitude of people, drawing multiple lawsuits against Doucet Drilling Corporation. Following these events, founder Harvey Doucet seemingly commits suicide. However, his oldest son, H, suspects foul play and, alongside his father's bodyguard, Playcide, sets off to solve the mystery. Leaving New Iberia, Louisiana, H travels to Memphis, Tennessee, where he begins to discover clues to a larger conspiracy involving hedge fund billionaires and high-level corporate lobbyists from Washington. Things get even more complicated when another man dies by suicide under mysterious circumstances, and H finds himself attacked by nefarious men, causing him to fear for his life.
A captivating mix of murder-mystery and corporate conspiracy, Pillars of Salt digs its claws into you from the start and refuses to let go until the end. Author J.A. Adams incorporates plenty of thrills and suspense into the narrative to keep the reader hooked throughout the pages. The plot is well-paced and full of twists and turns that you never see coming. H is a relatable protagonist, and because of his likable personality, it's easy to root for him. The corporate greed on display nicely parallels the real-world scams committed by hedge fund billionaires of Wall Street. Much like the book's plot, they are protected by powerful politicians who have their own vested interests. Recommended to fans of thrillers.
