Polar Deception by Barbara Hanson Clark is a gripping eco-thriller set in the year 2050, where the collapse of Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier has reshaped coastlines and pushed civilization backward into outdated technology. However, hidden deep within Antarctica lie magnetic crystals powerful enough to restore modern life. The mining of these crystals would trigger a catastrophic event, but that doesn't stop Dr. Carlos Perez. He is a ruthless scientist who murders his colleagues to secure the crystals for a buyer. Seeking to make a new deal, he returns to the research facility on a pleasure cruise. Diana Harris, a widowed geologist and sustainability advocate, is also on board. She was on the cruise to heal and move forward in her life, but she instead became entangled in Perez’s dangerous schemes. With the CIA and Chinese intelligence both watching and Carlos ready to kill again, Diana must fight against this crazy man and nature to save herself and everyone else as well.
Author Barbara Hanson Clark did a fantastic job of creating an entertaining story with a fascinating plot and a fantastic protagonist. I loved Diana and how sharp-minded she was. She knew what signs to look for, how to fight against Perez, and how to survive. She wasn’t rash or too bold; Diana was calculating, and that made me love her more. Her grief only made her more relatable and the perfect woman for the job. Strangely enough, I enjoyed Carlos Perez just as much. He was evil, conniving, and crafty. He was smart and knew how to use his intelligence for maximum profit. The premise is both imaginative and very similar to our current environmental concerns. I liked how the author made sure readers were invested in the story from the get-go. The descriptions are chilling, and the pace of the story just makes everything seem real. I loved Polar Deception!
