Popper and Friends: Popper Finds a New Home by IL Ritchie is a 32-page illustrated children’s story about Popper, a woodpecker who leaves home in search of his own. He’s grown too big for his bed, and now it’s time to get out into the world and find a place of his very own. But actually, discovering where he belongs is not as simple as it seems. As he visits places and characters he knows, he intends to create his own place where he is likely to thrive. Can he ever find where he belongs?

First, let me praise the artwork produced by Yulia Potts. Cuteness and color pour out of each and every page in a vibrant fashion. Young readers will love meeting Popper and his friends through the pictures that are obviously done by a professional. The story itself is excellent, and it can lead to positive discussions about homelessness, personal worth and well-being, and finding a direction in life, if that’s what the topic is about. I can see this used in school classrooms as well as children’s bedrooms with parents and kids sharing this story together. I like the support of the friends Popper has. They don’t tell him exactly where he belongs but provide kind advice to help him along his journey. And finally, he finds what he’s been looking for. Popper and Friends: Popper Finds a New Home by IL Ritchie is a wonderful story about growing up and self-discovery, perfect for young readers. Outstanding book! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommended.
