Put a Bug in Your Ear by Sam Sumac begins as a giant gecko, He-Knew-Pat-Sajak, emerges from a volcano. Meanwhile, the Palmetto Bug Monster, a massive cockroach, destroys towns from Indiana to Chicago, advancing northwest. In Alaska, reporter Eve Sanderborn, cryptozoologist Usotsuki Shirinigatsuku, General Buchanan Richardson, and local guide Bugsy Morton gather at Tok to monitor the gecko and plan an intervention. The cockroach eventually reaches Alaska, facing off with He-Knew-Pat-Sajak near the Yukon River. The gecko is injured but not defeated, and Bugsy establishes a psychic link to help it maneuver. The alien android Baku arrives with knowledge and tools to coordinate with Bugsy. Together, the humans and Bugsy try to work with the gecko to respond to the cockroach in the lead-up to the ultimate showdown.

Put a Bug in Your Ear by Sam Sumac is the ultimate science fiction creature feature, mixing together a unique brand of fast-paced adventure and larger-than-life scenarios. From the moment the Palmetto Bug Monster wreaks havoc across major cities to the lively yet humorous interactions among a colorful cast, the standout being Bugsy and his confusion over the real responses of women, and the Neanderthal-like android Baku, the story just plows right on forward. Sumac serves up real panache in describing military logistics and kaiju battles, and I found the pieces of lore that move between to be particularly thoughtful. The writing style is satirical and intelligently witty, and between Sumac’s excellent storytelling and scenes full of action, humor, excitement, and brilliant dialogue, this impossible-to-put-down novel is a bundle of pure enjoyment for fans of imaginative science fiction. Very highly recommended.
