Zoe Tasia's Quest for the Queen's Pendant is a captivating YA fantasy that plunges readers into a world of magic, forbidden friendships, and a dangerous quest. Tate Shaw is not allowed to learn magic, but develops a friendship with a changeling and learns magic. When a changeling army, controlled by the nefarious fae queen, attacks her island, Tate and Fen set out on a daring quest into the dangerous fae realm. Their mission is to destroy the pendant that enslaves the changeling children. Their journey is fraught with challenges and dangers. Fen, a changeling himself, struggles against the queen's growing influence on his mind as he advances toward her castle. At the same time, Tate faces the accelerated aging effects of the fae land. With the odds stacked against them, can they succeed in destroying the source of the queen’s magic and save those they love and their land?
Quest for the Queen's Pendant is well-plotted, and the magic is ingeniously written to entice readers. The idea of a queen using magic to force those with magic to fight for her is strong. The author creates unlikely heroes in Tate and Fen. When Tate is introduced, she is young and fragile, always protected by her parents, who won’t let her go out alone. On the other hand, Fen has magic; luckily, he is unaffected by the power of the queen’s pendant. One thing I loved about this book is how the author stacks the odds against the two characters as they progress. The closer they get to their goal, the harder it becomes. The prose is excellent, and the worldbuilding is impeccably accomplished. Zoe Tasia mesmerizes readers with magic, details, and deeply flawed, unforgettable characters.
