Rainbows of Joy: From a Diary of Despair by Lynn M is a memoir that follows the author's healing journey, someone who suffered from depression, alcohol addiction, and wallowed in despair after a broken marriage. In this book, the author shares the journey towards healing following the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is also a story of a great priest, Rev. LaVerne Wingert, who realized his dream of creating an oasis of healing, Wakonda Prayer House, where people suffering from emotional pain could come for healing.
The book features testimonies and moving excerpts from the Bible, reflections on life, poems, and letters, all written in an engaging style. Lynn M’s book is filled with hope and encouragement, a story that empowers readers to build their sense of self-worth, to set boundaries, and to seek inner freedom. I enjoyed the way the relationship between the priest and the author is portrayed. The memoir is filled with emotional themes, personal relationships, guilt, self-love, faith, and a lot more. The author features beautiful letters received from a dear friend over a period of twenty years.
Rainbows of Joy: From a Diary of Despair is filled with insightful passages and the author writes about things that will resonate in the hearts of many readers. For instance, she explains how our sense of guilt can negatively affect our relationships and drive us to more emotional pain: “Did you know there are two kinds of guilt to be aware of, real and unreal guilt? When I am hurting, I relate to others out of the pain that I feel, sometimes punishing them with the destructive behavior, which just creates more guilt.” This is an inspiring story that is courageously told. In it, the author lays bare her vulnerability, and shares lessons of healing and growth that will, most certainly, benefit readers.
