Ready For Takeoff: For Children Seeking Courage and Confidence While Flying by Joy Marie Berg is a must-have children's picture book. It is Margaret's and Michael's first time flying without their parents. Margaret, at 18, is used to flying and isn't afraid, but Michael is only 8, and for him it is a big challenge that brings a lot of anxiety and many questions. Michael follows his sister through the airport and listens to her instructions, but when he notices the buttons and screens in the cockpit, he wonders whether the pilots can handle them all. Luckily, a man next to them introduces himself as a captain for that airline and offers to answer all Michael's questions about planes. Thus, from takeoff to landing, with the airline captain's willingness to share his knowledge and experience in aviation, Michael learns how airplanes work and how safe flights are, which makes him feel better.
Ready For Takeoff is a helpful, informative, and well-done picture book by Joy Marie Berg that makes flying less intimidating and more comfortable. It features superb illustrations and clear, interesting, gentle, and age-appropriate explanations and aviation facts. As flying can be stressful for anyone, especially kids, this book teaches, among other things, about the buttons and switches in the cockpit, sounds, turbulence, the autopilot, airplane engines, contrails, and answers to questions such as how many hours a pilot must fly to become a captain, why the cabin lights dim, or what happens if lightning strikes the airplane. It is also the perfect choice for parents who need help preparing their young one(s) for their first or any airplane ride to alleviate some of their worries.
