Recipe for Rivals by Kasey Stockton revolves around Nova, a single mother who recently relocated to tiny Arcadia Creek, Texas, with her children, Ben and Alice, after a harsh divorce from her ex-husband, Carter. As Nova tries to settle into a new routine as a single parent, managing co-parenting issues with Carter, she must also adjust to the life of a slower-paced town. She meets local firefighter Dusty who is exceptionally skilled at unintentionally annoying her. Over time, Dusty and Nova form a healthier rapport, but Nova is hesitant to pursue a relationship due to her past, her role as a mother, and lingering feelings of resentment toward Carter. Meanwhile, Dusty is in the throes of his own issues, including past relationships and his role in the community, the most pressing of which is trying to protect a young boy from a dangerous situation.
Kasey Stockton's Recipe for Rivals: Arcadia Creek Book 3 is a heartfelt and thoughtful story on the power of community and second chances—even if it is giving yourself a second chance. The writing is intelligent, warm, and sometimes witty, which Stockton uses well to balance the heavier problems that arise. The characters are exceptionally well-fleshed-out and, as a woman, I connected with Nova. As for Dusty...I mean, come on. He's a fireman! It's easy to root for both to make their way to each other properly. Stockton's pacing is steady, particularly in the way Nova and Dusty gradually connect in a meaningful way. The best part is the Arcadia Creek setting, a close-knit Texas town that extends beyond a simple backdrop into almost a character itself. With its mix of humor, heartache, and hope, this gem of a story will appeal to readers who enjoy touching, character-driven, small-town romances.
