Retreads by Steve Hobbs is a reality-shifting tale of mystery, intrigue, and romance. While there are several important characters, the story mostly focuses on two: Meg - a young girl from the past - and Sam – the head of a company capable of bringing the dead back to life through the strange components of the soil from an alternate world. As Meg struggles to adjust to her new life, she longs for the love she left behind. Meanwhile, Sam steps through the rift between both worlds and is trapped on the other side. There, he scrambles to stay alive and meets both friends and foes along the way.
I enjoyed reading Retreads. Author Steve Hobbs creates a unique experience filled with interesting people and plot twists. With vivid descriptions and realistic dialogue, he builds two worlds that come together to alter the lives of those caught up in the web of shifting time and alternate realities. In creating these worlds, Hobbs touches on the paradigms of religious belief and what is life and death. He subtly questions the prejudices humans hold and what makes one person judge another. As Meg and Sam both grow through their journeys, Sam finds there is much he needs to let go of while Meg learns what to hold onto. I would recommend Retreads to anyone who is searching for a fresh look at alternate worlds and shifting time.
