Karol Windsor’s Hypothermia follows Cassidy Blackburn, a Milwaukee travel writer whose life as an adventurer changes after a hunting accident leaves shrapnel lodged near his heart. A year after the accident, Cass writes close to home as anxiety over another cardiac emergency governs how far he travels. When his business partners and best friends, Italian siblings Dean and Levy Russo, accept a winter assignment in Leavenworth, Washington, they persuade Cass to join them. The Bavarian-style town offers a chance for the trio to travel together again, with Cass planning to stay within the limits set by his doctor. Their trip takes a dangerous turn when an avalanche strikes during a visit to Mission Ridge ski area. Buried beneath packed snow with three other survivors, Cass must find a way out as the temperature keeps falling.
Karol Windsor’s Hypothermia is outstanding and unique survival fiction. Windsor keeps the suspense high by making every new passage change what survival requires. Cass is a strong protagonist whose adventure experience gives the group a leader. When a horizontal fissure offers them a route forward, he scouts it alone, turning sideways as rock closes around him. I love Levy, a fearlessly capable woman who steps forward when the group needs leadership. That shows when she climbs a twenty-five-foot rockslide glazed with frost toward an opening above. As the survivors move further beneath the mountain, Windsor turns the caves into the antagonist itself, and what a hauntingly gorgeous setting it is; from the jagged dark stone, broken by cloudy blue ice beneath enormous icicles, to frosty white formations hanging overhead as phone light scatters across glassy cavern floors. Fast-paced and frightening, readers who enjoy survival thrillers will adore this.
