Rhio Saves the Big Project!: Rhio and Friends, Volume 2 is a picture book for children, grades K-3, written by John P. Curtin, Jr. and John P. Curtin, Sr. and illustrated by John P. Curtin, Jr. There was a big school fair coming up, and everybody was hard at work figuring out just what they'd create for it. Lena and Jenny decided to present a science project that required quite a bit of assembling. They decided to ask Rhio and his friends, who were watching television, to help them put their project together. The boys and girls all studied the project plans and began to work as a team. Rhio and his friends were building a castle for the history part of the fair. They used paper, wire, glue and lots of paint to create a castle they all thought was pretty good. They planned to deliver it to the school after the big Pop Walrus Football game, but something totally unexpected happened while they were playing.

John P. Curtin, Jr. and John P. Curtin, Sr.'s picture book for children, Rhio Saves the Big Project!, shows just what kids can accomplish when they work together as a team, both on their school projects and on the playing field. There are so many good messages imparted in this fun and even, at times, exciting children's book, especially the importance of getting girls interested in science and math and getting them involved in hands-on construction projects. The Pop Walrus Football game is inspired! Seeing poor Rhio, who's normally the biggest guy around, get faced down by the two giant elephants on the opposing team is hilarious, and having the diminutive Carrot stand in for him highlights the importance and potential of all kids, whether they're big or small. The illustrations are brilliant! They're brightly colored, and the images just pop off the pages at the reader. My favorite panel would have to be during the game, when Rhio is resting on the bench with stars whirling around his head, and Carrot has just heard that he's getting sent to play in Rhio's place. The look on Carrot's face at the news is priceless. Rhio Saves the Big Project!: Rhio and Friends, Volume 2 is most highly recommended.
