Ellie Harlow and the Declaration of Courage is a wonderful historical fantasy and the second book in A.V. Harlow’s Art Escapes series. We meet Nathan and Ellie on a guided tour of the United States Capitol Rotunda. As they look at John Trumbull’s Declaration of Independence, a famous painting symbolizing American history, they suddenly fall into 1776 and find themselves by Thomas Jefferson’s desk. Writing the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson keeps finding his draft dreadful, and the Ink Flies’ buzzing attacks on his draft make him feel even more miserable. Ellie and Nathan start helping Jefferson and become his unexpected co-editors. Suddenly, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin join them. But will Ellie and Nathan rescue Jefferson’s draft so it passes Congress? And what lessons will they learn in the process?
A.V. Harlow’s Ellie Harlow and the Declaration of Courage is a perfect read; captivating, informative, and wonderfully supportive of learners. As a non-American adult, I enjoyed learning about Trumbull’s iconic painting. The full-page, colorful illustrations were beautiful, enchanting, memorable, and enhanced the storytelling. I appreciated how A.V. Harlow transposed an interest in art history into this marvelous story. I liked the message about choosing the right words when writing. But what made this story stand out for me was its encouragement of neurodivergent learners, with Nathan as the role model, overcoming his perception of words and courageously engaging with Jefferson in the difficult battle with Ink Flies. I highly recommend this fabulous story to middle-grade readers, history and art teachers, carers, and everyone interested in American history and art.
