In Riddlin Rising, most of the earth has been destroyed by the nuclear weapons of the Third World War. People live in a town surrounded by tall walls to keep the storms at bay. But, the walls are old and starting to fail. Larry Riddlin is an obscure cult member determined to raise an ancient demon. On Halloween, he and his cult are able to call the demon, but something else happens during the ritual. The moon shatters and large dragons begin to hatch from it. Each of the dragons picks a city to terrorize. The appearance of the dragons takes away from Larry’s glory, so he heads to the nearest city with his followers and summons his demon again. This time, he is able to enforce a slight amount of control over it and is able to make it look like he called his demon to get rid of the dragon. Now the government wants him, along with a number of other people. Jeff Judkins and Roy Ashcraft do an amazing job of placing you into the future and giving you the feeling that you are really there.
Riddlin Rising: Book 1 of Emergence starts with a reasonable premise. Everyone knows that the idea of a third world war is a real threat, and the use of nuclear weapons is a real possibility. What effects nuclear weapons will have on the environment and the earth we don’t yet know, but Jeff Judkins and Roy Ashcraft give you a reasonable idea in this story. The walls around the city seem natural, as well as the power shortage that the cities are facing. This is a great novel for young adults and youths. Males probably more than females will enjoy it, but it has a broad appeal overall.
